You have heard the idea that it is important to take care of yourself first. Why is this so critical to your life and your success?
The biggest issue is that we are often focused on achieving more: more status, more money, more stuff. And this ends up being a very outward focus that inevitably leads to more struggle and stress. Stop looking outwards and start looking inwards. When you look inwards, you will always find your way, and it will be a much gentler path with more joy and ease.
Answer these questions for yourself? 1. Am I too busy? Do I hardly enjoy anything because it is off to what’s next? 2. Did I lose my joy? Or do I have some joy but not a lot? Do I suffocate my joy with seriousness? 3. Do I feel filled up? If I felt full, would I have more to give? 4. If there was more meaning in my life, would I think more about the bigger picture and helping others and less about myself and simply paying the bills or accumulating more stuff? 5. If my soul was on fire with passion and purpose, would it be easier to do what I have to do every day?
When you get on an airplane, every single time they give you a key instruction for life. Put your oxygen mask on you first and then on others. Why is that so important? Because if you stop breathing, you can’t help anyone anymore. The same goes for having joy, feeling full in a positive way, having meaning and living with your soul on fire.
What are you doing to fill yourself up first, so you have more to give? There are so many options: play, paint, read, build a sand castle, have a bubble bath, spend time in nature, play an instrument, blow up balloons and see who can keep them in the air the longest. It sounds simplistic but you will be thrilled with how getting back to the basics will fill you up again.
I was at a retreat and we colored. Yes colored. I know it sounds trivial but we colored Mandalas. Google mandalas and choose some to color so you see what I mean. It is so incredibly refreshing to set your mind free through this beautiful meditation. We must get back to the simple things again to really get what life is all about.
Start doing things “just for you” and you will find your joy again. Of course there needs to be a proper balance because it can’t just be all about you. As you fill yourself up, you will have so much more to give.
